CSOs AGITATES FOR AN END TO INCESSANT KILLINGS IN IMO, CALLS ON ICC TO INVESTIGATE SPONSORS OF VIOLENCE
The recent wave of killings and property devastation in Imo State is disturbing, reprehensible, and necessitates a forceful and determined reaction. The terrifying atmosphere of terror unleashed by unknown gunmen on the one hand, and what appear to be state-sponsored attacks on the other, has turned Imo into a killing field.
We deplore the pervasiveness of violence, heinous attacks, and the deaths that occur. Imo State, which was previously calm, has continued to suffer targeted assassinations and politically motivated attacks, leaving the people at the mercy of death merchants.
It should be noted that as civil society organizations, we are gathering verifiable information and witnesses to support our appeal to the United Nations (UN) and the International Criminal Court (ICC), particularly regarding politically motivated violence in Imo State.
Our goal is to bring individuals or groups who use violence and other non-cultural ways to obtain or keep power to justice, no matter how long it takes. This action has become unavoidable because if caution is not used, we may witness another "Borno scenario."
According to a report by the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), Imo State is clearly facing a major human security danger, with over 400 deaths as a result of violence recorded in Imo between January 2019 and December 2021.
Now is the time to be bold and fearless even in the face of horror, which is why, as a coalition of Civil Society Organizations, we strongly condemn the senseless deaths and property devastation in Imo State.
Furthermore, our demands and prayers are for the State Government to accept responsibility for preserving life and property in the State and to refrain from any action that could exacerbate the State's already fragile security architecture.
Second, we urge the administration to devise strategies for true reconciliation that will usher in long-term peace. In addition, we urge all politicians and political parties to follow the rules of democratic engagement and enable the will of the public to prevail.
likewise, we appeal to the State Government, led by Senator Hope Uzodimma, to massively increase investments in communities most affected by the unfortunate violence in Imo State, taking into account that women and children are the most affected during conflicts, as our investigations in Imo State have confirmed.
Finally, we would like to urge all parties and organizations in Imo State to embrace peace, allow normalcy to return, and seek genuine reconciliation via dialogue rather than the barrel of a gun. By doing so, the issues of peace and inclusive development will be addressed.
