MSDGI Clears Air On Young Pastor's Pre-wedding Photos Causing Stir Online
By Ehis Agugu
The controversial viral pre-wedding photo of a young pastor and his fiancée preparing to wed in Benin City has proved to be an old picture, investigation has revealed.
The viral photo, which has attracted mixed reactions among social media users, saw many of them criticizing the planned wedding, alleging that the Pastor and his fiancée are both underage.
But a visit by Edo State Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues (MSDGI) last week revealed the photos are old ones.
After the robust discussion at the Ministry headquarters on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, and by the physical appearance of the intending couple, as well as certificate of birth issued by the National Population Commission, it was gathered that the intending couple is of legal age for marriage in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Responding to some probing questions, the bride-to-be, Saint Blessing Imasuen, disclosed that she was born on April 30th 1997 and finished from secondary school in 2015.
Also responding, Pastor of the intending ‘couple-to-be,’ (name withheld) emphasized that it is against the rules of the church to join under-aged persons.
He added that critical interview and marriage counseling sessions were done to confirm their eligibility before the marriage date was fixed and announced to the congregation.
The functioning Director of Child Development Department, Mrs Kate Bello, who led the social investigation team thereafter advised the intending couple to come to the Ministry with their parents, birth certificates, and other necessary documents, thus scheduled Tuesday, April 19, 2022, for further discussion and they happily complied.
Child marriage is a crime as Edo State Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues is working relentlessly to end harmful traditional practices which are adversely detrimental to the well-being of the people who go through these practices and the Ministry is open to partnership.
