WANEP pays advocacy visit to Edo-MSDGI
By Ehis Agugu
As part of an effort to seek collaboration with the Edo State Government for the effective implementation of the Nigeria National Action Plan (NNAP) on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP - Nigeria) paid an advocacy visit to the Edo State Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues (MSDGI) on March 11, 2022, to brainstorm on the establishment of the State Action Plan (SAP).
WANEP Edo State Coordinator, Barr. Agatha Osieke in her address disclosed that the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 is dedicated entirely to the link that exists between armed conflicts, peace-building and the gender dimension and builds on the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.
Osieke continued: "the first NNAP document had 5 pillars which are Prevention, Participation, Protection, Promotion and Prosecution.
"To this, all states of the federation are expected to further localize the Nigeria National Action Plan (NNAP) to State Action Plan (SAP) based on the issues peculiar to them which in the long run can be stepped down to the local government and ward levels."
Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, Mrs Barbara N. Osobajo thanked the leadership of WANEP for collaborating with the state government in enhancing women’s participation in peace and security in Nigeria.
She reassured WANEP that Edo State Government will take quick action to the realization of the State Action Plan on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.
Noting that WANEP should be rest assured of the state's commitment as management and staff of the Ministry are very willing to jump on board to make this a reality in the very shortest possible time.
The draft State Action Plan (SAP) for Edo will be ready in two weeks for validation and public presentation.
