MSDGI advocacy, sensitization visit to Benin Central Mosque on the Effect of VAPP Law on GBV

  By Ehis Agugu

In continuance of the campaign for a more socially inclusive society where all are given equal opportunity to attain their highest potential, the Edo State Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues (MSDGI) paid on Friday, March 18, 2022, advocacy and sensitization visit to the Benin Central Mosque.

Speaking to the congregation just after they observed a revered moment of prayer and fellowship, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Barbara N. Osobajo urged everyone to take up the responsibility to make little contributions in our collective efforts to address the ills identified by the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law.

Represented by the Director of Gender Issues, Mrs J.I. Ihensekhien, Mrs Osobajo corrected the popular misconception that this call is for women’s rights alone, noting that this is but half-truth, as Edo State VAPP Law 2021 is all-embracing.

She noted, "It captures the possibilities that endanger all irrespective of their gender.

"As a Ministry, we are working relentlessly with the office of the Wife of the Governor to further gender equality and empowerment for all and sundry, and addressing the physical, psychological consequences of gender-based violence.

"Plans are on the way to make simplified versions of the VAPP Law available to the general public, as well as in indigenous languages, so as to make its provisions clear to all."

"Whenever we see or hear anything odd (violence against persons), we must commit to saying something and do something about what we have seen or heard. This way, we would have contributed to strengthening the Laws as it becomes strong when it is useful to society," the Permanent Secretary added.

On his part, the Chief Imam of Benin Central Mosque, Alhaji Abdufatah Enabulele showered encomium on Edo State Government for bringing the message to their doorstep as he enjoined Muslim faithful to consolidate on it.

"Furtherance to this laudable development, we will communicate with all Imams in Edo as we are committed to stepdown the message to our people across the state in a language they will understand." Chief Imam avowed.
