Edo State Government promises succour for returnees
Okoduwa hails Obaseki on appointment
Edo State Government has restated its commitment towards nipping the scourge of illegal migration currently pervading the state on the bud.
The Special Senior Assistant on Human Trafficking and Illegal Migration to the state Governor, Comrade Solomon Okoduwa made the assurance Tuesday at a ceremony to mark the World Migration Day in Benin City.
While expressing government's readiness in ensuring the Libya returnees and other victims of human trafficking of the state's origin are rehabilitated and Incorporated into the society, Okoduwa said the state government has approved one hundred million Naira (N100,000,000) seed grant and 150 hectares of farmlands for some recently trained returnees in view to engaging them in various skills as they have become more vulnerable.
The SSA on Human Trafficking and Illegal Migration said it was an ongoing process that will benefit all those who avail themselves for the programme.
He said, "the dedication of policies and programmes of empowerment, employment and reintegration of returnees as an attempt to cushioning the root causes of illegal migration which has always served as a fertile ground for the illegal business were government's bold steps.
Okoduwa added that the current openness of government for concrete covenants on partnerships with international NGOs, Civil Society organizations, religious institutions, traditional rulers, women and youth based organizations in the consolidated fight against illegal migration.
However, the governor aide identified government's sincerity of purpose in ensuring the arrest and prosecution of human traffickers in Edo state to serve as a deterrent to those who see business in the unwholesome venture.
Okoduwa also pointed out that his appointment as SSA on Human Trafficking and Illegal Migration has further revealed the sincerity and willingness of this present administration to solving the problems of illegal migration as well as empowering the youth.
Earlier, a rally was held in parts of Benin City organised by activists under the aegis of Network of CSO Against Human Trafficking in Niger Delta to mark World Migration Day.
The protest rally was led by Jennifer Ero.
A brief stop at the state House of assembly, the activists appealed to the legislators to quickly pass bill recently presented by the state government into law by giving it accelerated hearing, while advocating for a life jail term for convicted trafficker.
Address the activists and some returnees, Speaker Kabiru Adjoto promised that the house will collaborate with civil society organizations to nip the business of Trafficking on the bud
"We are also poised to destroying the international human trafficking Cartel. We were at Italy recently to look remote causes and collaborate with relevant authorities there to end the menace"
Jennifer Ero however said "the rally and laying of wreaths were in commemoration of the Migrants Day and aimed at showing solidarity to migrants that have died while crossing the Mediterranean Sea or in the desert and those being tortured to death on transit route and destination countries, to also convey a message to policy makers and to create awareness to general public the side effects of irregular migration."
The president of Conference of Non Governmental organizations, CONGOS, Mr. Destiny Enabulele, members of Initiative for Initiative for Youth Awareness on Migration Development and Re-integration, IYAMIDR and officials of National Orientation Agency were part of the rally.
