New Police Act, 2020

 President Buhari on September 16, 2020, signed the new Police Act 2020 into law and this replaced the old Police Act, CAP P.19, LFN, 2004. Below are the highpoints of the new amendments that every Nigerian should be aware of: 1) Section 66(1) of the Police Act 2020, ONLY a Police Officer who is a LEGAL PRACTITIONER, can prosecute. Police Officer who is NOT a LEGAL PRACTITIONER cannot prosecute unlike the the Old Act that gave non-Police lawyers prosecutorial power. 2) Just like in the movies, Nigeria can now have private detectives who are not employed by the government. The Nigeria Police Force is responsible for vetting and approving the registration of Private Detective Schools and Private Investigative Outfits. See Sec. 4(i). 3) The Police is mandated to report the findings of its investigation to the Attorney General of the Federation or State as the case may be. Obaseki reassures more opportunities for girl-child

 The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the protection and empowerment of the girl-child, promising to tackle all forms of gender-based violence, discriminations, exploitations, political alienation and other social inequalities suffered by the female gender. Obaseki gave the assurance in a message in Benin City to commemorate the 2020 International Day of the Girl-Child celebrated by the United Nations and its sister agencies. The governor reassured that his government would continue to create an enabling environment for the girl-child to realise her fullest potential and occupy her rightful position in society. He described the theme of the celebration, “My voice, Our equal future” as apt, noting that the girl-child will blossom if her needs and challenges are addressed.  October 11, 2020 Press release CPN celebrates international day of the Girl Child Child Protection Network (CPN), Nigeria joins the national and global communities to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child. This Observance Day was declared by a resolution of the United Nations in December 2011 and was first observed on 11th October 2012. The day focuses on increasing awareness of issues faced by girls around the world. The antecedent being that of the precarious situation of the Girl Child who had become endangered and beset all around by social, cultural and gender-based factors that constrained full developmental potentials.
