Edo govt establishes sexual assault referral centre for rape survivors, others

By Ehis Agugu The Edo State Government has concluded plans for the establishment of a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), as part of efforts by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to tackle the incidences of rape and other sexual assaults, as well as cater for the needs of survivors in the state. Commissioner for Social Development and Gender Issues, Hon. Maria Edeko, said this during a 5-day training course in Sexual Assault Trauma Counselling (SARC) organised for counsellors attached to the ministry to fast track the delivery of SARC services in the state. The training course was supported by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme and funded by the European Union, and held in Benin City, the Edo State capital. Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, the Commissioner noted that setting up the centre will make it easier for survivors (victims) of defilement/rape to come forward for treatment and advice, which will eventually boost the conviction rate...

Insecurity: LG Chairman solicits Edo Police boss's intervention

BENIN CITY - The Chairman, Ovia South- West Local Government Area, Comrade Destiny Enabulele has visited the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Lawan Jimeta Tanko to intimate him on the security challenges in the area. Enabulele was accompanied on the visit by senior government officials of the local government, including, the Vice Chairman, Hon. Fredrick Aimienwanwu, Secretary to the Local Government, Hon Obateru Oladimeji and Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA), Mr. Otote T. Briefing the Commissioner, Enabulele said that the security challenges in the area have overwhelmed the local government. He said the security challenges bother on cult related matters, Fulani herdsmen, activities of drug pedlers, as well as shortage of manpower in the Police Division in Iguobazuwa, the local government headquarters. Having vacated the injunction secured by Tony Adun aka Kabaka restraining the Edo State Government from executing the demolition notice earlier served him with regards to his illegally-sited property in Ugbor-Amagba axis of Benin City, the Edo State Government today mobilised heavy duty equipment and security officials to the said property for its demolition. Edo Polytechnic honours Enabulele with "Academic Council Chairman of the Year 2019 Award"

Executive Chairman, Ovia South West Local Government Area, Comr. Destiny Oghayerio Enabulele, was on Tuesday, honoured with an award of Excellence, as the "Academic Council Chairman of the Year 2019 by the department of Mass Communication of the Edo Polytechnic. The award was presented to the Chairman in recognition of his outstanding support and  development strides, towards the growth of academic institutions in Ovia South West Local Government Area. The Polytechnic Liberian, Mr. Ehichioya Udebor, while presenting the award to the council Chief, noted that under his leadership, Ovia South West Local Government is working. His speedy roads rehabilitation, construction of classrooms, building of UTME CBT Centre, amongst others, are testaments to his leadership qualities. The Council Chief, while thanking the institution for the honour bestowed on him, dedicated the award to the people and thanked Governor Godwin Obaseki for giving the youths the opportunity to soar. ...
